Review of National Anti Poverty Strategy - Framework Document

Following the United Nations World Summit in Copenhagen in 1995, the Government committed itself to the development of an Irish Anti-Poverty Strategy. In April 1997, the National Anti-Poverty Strategy, "Sharing in Progress" , was published, and the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs was given a lead role in its implementation. The NAPS set a ten-year target for poverty reduction in Ireland and examined poverty issues within five key themes.

These were:

  • Income Adequacy;

  • Unemployment;

  • Educational Disadvantage;

  • Rural Poverty;

  • Disadvantaged Urban Areas.
