Statement on Telecommunications - a Key Factor in Electronic Commerce and Competitiveness

The Government welcomed the publication today of the 'Statement on Telecommunications - a Key Factor in Electronic Commerce and Competitiveness' by the National Competitiveness Council.

The Statement deals with the growing importance of telecommunications and electronic commerce in the context of economic growth and international trade. It examines and makes recommendations in five broad areas:

  1. Use of advanced telecommunications and ICTs

  2. Monitoring Ireland's competitive position

  3. Advanced telecommunications deployment

  4. Leadership in digital business

  5. Development of Digital TV 

The Taoiseach said "The Government is determined to make Ireland a global leader in the Telecommunications and Information Technology sector. Through the innovative use of public-private partnership, we will connect Ireland to global telecommunications networks, and switch Ireland on to the world of the Internet and E-commerce. We have the talent, we will invest the necessary funding, and we will grasp the marvellous opportunity, which it offers".

The analysis and recommendations in the Statement will provide a timely input to the Governments ongoing efforts in promoting the competitiveness of Ireland in the field of telecommunications.

The Statement has been referred to the relevant Departments and agencies, including the Inter-Departmental Implementation Group on the Information Society.
