Government announce intention to hold pre-Budget debate

Government Chief Whip Pat Carey has this evening announced that time will be made available for all sides of the Dáil to contribute to a pre-Budget debate on November 17th following the publication by the Minister of the Pre-Budget Outlook.

Minister Carey said, "Pending agreement with the Opposition Whips, the Government is proposing that time be made available to discuss the economic options available in the Budget."

"Following recent comments from members of Fine Gael and Labour in relation to the need to cut the deficit by €4 billion next year, the parameters of the debate are clear. The Government will listen to the views and analysis from across the political spectrum on how best to return Ireland to growth and job creation."

"A number of reports should help to provide Deputies with the full range of economic choices available to the Government in framing the Budget. These reports include today's OECD report, the Commission on Taxation report and the Report on Public Service Numbers and Expenditure Programmes."
