Taoiseach meets Northern Minister

The Taoiseach Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., met the Northern Ireland Minister for Political Development Mr. Paul Murphy MP at Government Buildings this morning.

They both expressed satisfaction at the successful commencement of the substantive three strand talks, and urged all to participate fully and constructively in building the peace, for which the vast majority of people yearn.

The Minister Paul Murphy briefed the Taoiseach on the Public Processions Legislation, which the Taoiseach welcomed in broad principle. He expressed satisfaction that sporting fixtures of all kinds, including Gaelic games, had been specifically excluded from the legislation. In applying the legislation, it would be vitally important to distinguish legitimate expressions of cultural identity on different sides of the community which did not impinge on the rights of others, from activities likely to give rise to intercommunal strife.
