Taoiseach meets with H.R.H. Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia

The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., today confirmed that the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Joe Walsh T.D., will be travelling to Cairo next weekend to press for the re-opening of the live cattle trade with Egypt. The visit will be part of the Government's ongoing process of contact at official, diplomatic and Ministerial level to ensure that the markets for live cattle and beef in the Middle East are secured for Irish exporters.

As part of this process the Taoiseach had discussions today with Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia who is on an official visit to Ireland. The Government is determined to ensure that, following a short ban on Irish beef by the Saudi authorities last year because of the B.S.E. scare, this lucrative market (worth over £30 million in 1995) is maintained and exploited further.
