Message of sympathy on the death of RUC officer

I deeply regret the death of RUC officer Frank O'Reilly from injuries sustained during disturbances in Portadown. The Irish Government extends their deepest sympathy to the family of the officer, who was protecting the rights of the people of Portadown by upholding the rule of law. Those involved in and responsible for the rioting and attacks on the police that led to this death, coming on top of the deaths of the three Quinn children should hang their heads in shame. It is time the unseemly confrontation in Portadown was brought to a speedy conclusion, and I would support religious and community leaders in redoubling their efforts to achieve this now, so that a healing process and reasonable discussions about the future can begin directly between all the parties on an inclusive basis.
