Taoiseach Meets with Political Leaders and Irish Community in Chicago, Illinois

The Taoiseach, Mr Brian Cowen TD, is in Chicago today, Saturday, meeting with leaders of the Irish community there, as well as political leaders from Illinois.

Last night, Friday, the Taoiseach was guest of honour at the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago dinner, attended by approximately 1000 people.

In his speech the Taoiseach reflected on the contribution of the Irish to Chicago and, looked forward to a continued close relationship between Ireland and her diaspora.

He also stressed the attractions of Ireland as a place to invest in or to visit.

He also met with Chicago area members of the Global Irish Network, which was established last year

The Taoiseach was accompanied by the Irish Ambassador to the United States and the Irish Consul-General in Chicago.

The dinner was also attended by leading Irish-American figures, including Cardinal George of Chicago, the Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, Mayor of Chicago Richard M Daley and Senator Richard J Durbin

The Taoiseach will later today attend Mass in St Patrick's Cathedral and then walk in the St Patrick's Day parade.

In accordance with tradition, the Chicago river will be dyed green for the day
