We all know that, as a country and as a people, we are facing into a tough period ahead.
I’m not going to spell it out again, except to say, that there are a number of internal and external factors conspiring to give us the biggest economic challenge we have faced in a generation.

It is a pleasure to be here with you this morning to mark the official opening of the Left Bank Mall, the newest addition to a vibrant hub of activity in Athlone's West Side.
It is an honour to launch the official biography of Dr Patrick Hillery and to be asked to say a few words about him in the company of so many of his family and friends. Patrick Hillery was a distinguished Irishman and an exceptional figure in our public life. He made an immense contribution to the development of our country. Throughout his long political career, his passion was singular - Ireland. His resolve was simple - to advance the cause of our people.
I attended the meeting of the European Council in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, 11 and 12 December. I was accompanied at the meeting by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, T.D. The Minister of State with responsibility for European Union Affairs, Dick Roche, T.D. and the Attorney General were also part of the delegation.

I would like to thank the French Ambassador for inviting me to join you for lunch and to address you today. The French Presidency has given steadfast and energetic leadership to the EU in the last six months. And here in Dublin Ambassador d’Albert has carried the flame. I know that you will all join me in commending France on a Presidency very well done indeed.
