No. 25 of 2002 - The European Union (Scrutiny) Act 2002

What does this Law do:

This law provides for the introduction of new arrangements for the scrutiny of EU business by the Oireachtas.  Under the terms of the law, Government Departments prepare information notes on draft legislative proposals including regulations and directives, joint actions and common positions under the Common Foreign and Security Policy and a range of measures in the Justice and Home Affairs area.  These information notes, and texts of the legislative proposals, are laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas before being reviewed the European Scrutiny sub-committee.

It  includes new procedures for reporting by the Government on developments in the European Union.  From 2003, Ministers will submit two reports each year to the Oireachtas on measures, proposed measures, and other developments in the EU relevant to their Departments.  The Government will also compile an annual report for the Oireachtas on developments in the EU.
