Publication of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) Report: Ireland’s Economy in the Early 21st Century.

The Government today welcomed the publication by the National Economic and Social Council of its Report, “Ireland’s Economy in the Early 21st Century”.

The Taoiseach said that the Report provides a shared understanding amongst the social partners of the economic context and the challenges we face collectively during the current Review of Towards 2016.

He continued: “This NESC Report provides a useful and insightful assessment of the recent performance of the Irish economy - including over the first two and a half years of Towards2016 – and its prospects over the short and medium term.”

“This Report addresses the challenges that we now face brought on by an accumulation of factors such as a global credit contraction and increased energy and commodity prices. It points to the fact that services and manufacturing will continue to have a key role to play and that the dynamism of Ireland’s regions could be a potential new asset in economic development.”

“The challenges that we will face as a result of the more difficult policy contexts ahead are best addressed within the framework of the social partnership process and the NESC Report is a particularly valuable input to the Review of Towards 2016 that is currently ongoing.”

The Taoiseach thanked the NESC Council members, who are representative of the social partners, independent experts and Government Departments, and the secretariat for their efforts in producing such a high quality Report.
