Taoiseach welcomes Joint Statement by Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness
The Taoiseach, Mr Brian Cowen TD, has welcomed the joint statement issued by Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness as they prepare to take up office as First Minister and deputy First Minister tomorrow.
The Taoiseach said:
“I welcome the expressed commitment of Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness to work together in the Northern Ireland Executive, as well as their joint recognition that the outstanding issues facing the Executive require urgent attention.
I very much welcome their intention to engage in substantive discussions on the issues that have been raised and require resolution in the context of the continuing implementation of the St Andrews Agreement.
The Irish Government will continue to play an active role in these discussions.
In partnership with the British Government, we will continue to do all we can to assist the incoming First Minister, deputy First Minister and their Executive colleagues.
I wish Peter and Martin well as they collectively take on the challenges of leadership.”
