The Taoiseach speaks with representatives of employers and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Statement

The Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., held a series of discussions with representatives of employers and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in Government Buildings today.

The Taoiseach underlined the changed context in terms of the evolving economic situation and, in particular, the further developments in the Exchequer finances, since talks were concluded in early August.

The Taoiseach welcomed the fact that the parties have affirmed their commitment to engaging in further discussions aimed at establishing if agreement on a new national pay agreement is possible.  The Taoiseach said “I think all sides are agreed on the need to avoid drift and uncertainty as to whether an agreement is possible.”

The Taoiseach assured the parties that he stood ready to assist the process in any way he could.
