Taoiseach to Meet Emperor Akihito

 

The Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen, T.D., concludes his visit to Japan today with a courtesy call on His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Akihito, at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.  Emperor Akihito recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of his succession to the Chrysanthemum Throne.

Later, the Taoiseach will visit the Tokyo operations of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, where he will meet with the Chairman of MHI, Mr. Kazuo Tsukuda.  The Taoiseach and Mr. Tsukuda will discuss new developments in renewable energy and environmentally friendly technologies.  Mitsubishi Heavy Industries employs 33,000 people world-wide and has an annual turnover of almost US$32bn.

Today’s meetings are the final engagements of the Taoiseach’s visit to Japan, which was at the official invitation of the Japanese Government.  The Taoiseach has been accompanied on the visit by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D. and the Minister of State for Trade and Commerce, Mr. John McGuinness, T.D.
