12-10-2000 Taoiseach welcomes approval of award of contract for Dublin Port Tunnel

The Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D., today (12 October 2000) welcomed the approval by the National Roads Authority of the award of the construction contract for the Dublin Port Tunnel. The successful contractor is the Nishimatsu Mowlem Irishenco (NMI) Consortium. The design of the project will now be mobilised quickly, with construction likely to commence within 6 months.

Welcoming this key advance in the delivery of the National Development Plan, the Taoiseach said "this is a major milestone in improving Dublin's transport. The Dublin Port Tunnel is a crucial element of the Dublin Transport Initiative and is designed to rid the city centre of the inappropriate burden of heavy goods traffic travelling to and from Dublin Port. It will bring particular benefit also to residential areas in and close to the North Inner City.

Today's development puts us on track to commence this ambitious project – one of the largest road tunnels in these islands – by the first half of 2001 and to complete it by 2004."

The Taoiseach wished well to all concerned in advancing the Dublin Port Tunnel to completion over the next 3 to 4 years, adding " this project will bring enormous benefits to Dublin and beyond. It will be carried out to high safety and environmental standards. It will have the support of the Government and, I am confident of the wider public, as a major flagship of the National Development Plan".
