Launch of the new ‘City Channel’ Station, in Georges Restaurant, Baggot Street

I am delighted to be here tonight to launch Dublin’s first and only local television station, City Channel and I would like to thank David Harvey for inviting me here.

The launch of this Station represents a very exciting development for the viewing audience in Dublin and its surrounding areas. City Channel will offer Dubliners information and entertainment dedicated to the interests of the Dublin area. It will provide a means through which local events are covered and publicised, and indeed, local issues and concerns are aired.

From this evening, City Channel will be available to 110,000 homes in the greater Dublin area and the expansion of the service into more and more Dublin homes is set to continue as NTL roll out their digital platform in the city. City Channel is one of the first television stations in Ireland to be awarded a contract for the provision of television content under section 41 of the 2001 Broadcasting Act, and I compliment the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland for their continued success in expanding the broadcasting opportunities in this country.

We need to ensure that choice and diversity is available in television and radio and the Commission is committed to ensuring that this exists.

I believe that the schedule planned for the station will offer something for everyone, and indeed will capture corners of the viewing market, which are not currently covered by existing stations. With programmes on topics as diverse as travel, property, fashion, motoring and eating out, all with a Dublin focus, there is sure to be something for everyone.  I am pleased to note that City Channel also addresses the needs of the whole community and will also air Ireland’s first programme for the gay community, as well as the first ever dedicated programme for the Polish Community. I would like to compliment the company for these initiatives and congratulate all of the City Channel staff who have worked so hard to get the station on air.

I also welcome the new job opportunities that this new station will create for those in the television production industry in Ireland. It is important that we are given every opportunity to continue to produce high-quality, home-grown programming which is informative and entertaining.

Finally, I would like to wish all of the City Channel team the very best in your new endeavour. I have no doubt that this new channel will prove a huge success.

Thank you.
