Tourism Ireland Event, Dubai on Wednesday, 17 January, 2007 at 8.30 p.m.

Thank you for your warm welcome.

I am delighted to have this opportunity to meet members of the travel industry here in Dubai.

All of the indications are that 2006 was a record year for tourism in Ireland, both in terms of the number of overseas visitors and the revenue generated. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Tourism Ireland for their excellent work in promoting Ireland as a holiday destination overseas which helped us to achieve this impressive performance.

This year, close to 9 million tourists will visit the island of Ireland – nearly twice the population of the island. Over 80% of these visitors come from 4 countries – Britain, USA, Germany and France. The rapid growth in access to Ireland - particularly from low cost carriers - has encouraged shortbreaks to Ireland – but reducing the average length of stay.

I know that, at present, the visitor numbers from the UAE to Ireland are relatively modest. Looking at the statistics for the UK however, I note that not only were there 135,000 visitors from the UAE but the average length of stay was over two weeks. They often travel in large family groups and the spend per visit was one of the highest in the world! These are just the tourists we are looking for in Ireland – and we will be increasing our marketing activities in order to make sure we get our share!

I am aware that Tourism Ireland is, like most areas of trade, always looking for new markets – and has recently opened offices in China and India. Until this year, little marketing had been done in Dubai – or the Middle East in general.

The Aer Lingus Dublin/Dubai service, coupled with the Gulf Air service from Bahrain, means that there are now 6 flights a week to Ireland and the Middle East has become a new market.

In the last year, Tourism Ireland has appointed representation in Dubai – to help you sell and find out more about Ireland. We have also introduced a new visa office in Dubai which shortens the whole visa process.

I am convinced that Ireland has a lot to offer this market

One cannot fail to be impressed by the buzz and excitement here in Dubai but I am equally convinced that, from time to time, people have a desire to get away from the noise and the heat and head for somewhere a bit more relaxed, more private, where the air is fresher and the climate less challenging.

That is why people come to Ireland. They find a remarkably green island with intimate but vibrant cities and towns all of which are surrounded by remarkable landscapes. There are over 400 golf courses on the island – including the K club which hosted this year’s memorable Ryder Cup.

I am also aware of the remarkable interest in thoroughbred horse racing in this region. As you will be aware, Ireland has always been a world leader in the sphere of horse racing and breeding and this is an area where I feel there may be opportunities for additional tourism growth in the future.

I thank you for sparing the time to join us today. With your help,  we look forward to seeing increasing numbers visiting Ireland so that our friends in the airline business will soon consider a daily service!  I can promise you – and all your clients - a very warm welcome in Ireland  – and a cool climate!!
