Appointments to the District Court


At its meeting today, the Government nominated Ms. Marie Keane, Solicitor and Mr. John King, Solicitor for appointment by the President to the District Court.

The vacancies arise from the elevation to the Circuit Court of His Hon. Judge Eugene O’Kelly on 27 November 2014, and the retirement of Judge Eamon O’Brien on 24 January 2015.

The Government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional procedure.

Biographical Details for Ms. Marie Keane, Solicitor
§ Educated: National University of Ireland, Galway – BA (1988) and LLB (1991),
Law Society – Solicitors Professional Course (1994), Diploma in Commercial Conveyancing (2006) and Certificate in Mental Health Law (2011)
§ Enrolled as a solicitor: September 1994
§ Engaged in general practice with experience in family, criminal, employment, contract and mental health law, general and personal injury litigation, and conveyancing.
§ Accredited mediator
§ Member of the Law Society Family Law Committee: 2005 to date
§ Co founder of the Family Lawyers Mediation Group (Mid-West)

Biographical Details for Mr. John King, Solicitor
§ Educated: National University of Ireland, Galway – BA (1987) and LLB (1989)
§ Enrolled as a solicitor: December 1993
§ Extensive experience in the District, Circuit and High Court civil litigation as well as in criminal and family law litigation.
§ Partner in Hennessy & Co.: 2003 to date with wide experience in conveyancing, probate, revenue law, personal injury and criminal law.
