Minister for Diaspora Affairs Welcomes Funding for Emigrants and the Diaspora of over € 12.5 million

Mr Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Diaspora Affairs at the Departments of the Taoiseach and Foreign Affairs and Trade, today welcomed a total Budget allocation of €12.595 million euro funding for Emigrants and the Diaspora in 2015.

Speaking today, the Minister said:
“Today’s Budget allocation of €12.595 million clearly demonstrates this Government’s commitment to supporting Emigrants and engaging with our Diaspora. This sum includes the maintenance of funding for the Emigrant Support Programme at €11.595 million in 2015 with an additional €1 million for new diaspora projects and initiatives.”

“We must remember that the Irish Diaspora encompasses a diverse range of groups and individuals who have different levels of connection with Ireland and have varying needs and expectations arising from that.”

“ I am working to finalise a new National Strategy to ensure that our approach is relevant to every section of that Diaspora and will provide the appropriate framework for connecting with them.”

“ With the additional funding now available, I will continue the important work that has been done to support emigrants and will invest in new projects and initiatives designed to further broaden and deepen Ireland’s engagement with its global Diaspora.”
