French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Mr Harlem Désir, will arrive in Ireland later today for a two-day official visit, centred on a programme of engagements in Cork. The visit is being hosted by Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Mr Dara Murphy TD.
The two Ministers will meet this evening, accompanied by officials, for an in-depth discussion on EU issues, including current economic challenges. Speaking in advance of the visit, Minister Murphy said:
“Ireland and France enjoy very close relations as partners in the European Union. I am very pleased that Secretary of State Désir has accepted my invitation and that it has been possible to reschedule the visit, which was postponed last month in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.”
“I am particularly delighted to host the Secretary of State in Cork, which has a vibrant French community and maintains strong links with France in terms of tourism, trade and investment. Huge potential exists for both Ireland and France from the further development of our economic links.”
“The programme for the visit reflects the deep connections that exist between Ireland, France and our people. With this visit we are showcasing the strength of the Irish-French relationship and looking to develop further our cooperation, especially in areas such as energy.”
On Friday morning, in University College Cork, the Ministers will meet with Irish and French researchers collaborating in the field of marine renewable energy. The Ministers will be given a demonstration onboard an electric Renault Zoe, as part of the Drive4ZeroInitiative, a pilot project based in Cork that aims to promote the use of electric vehicles in Ireland. Both programmes form part of Cork’s bid to become European Green Capital for 2017.
Later on Friday, the two Ministers will meet with business and political representatives in the Port of Cork. The programme will continue with a visit to the Jameson Distillery in Midleton, a prime example of the strong economic links between France and Ireland. It will conclude with a meeting with the local French community in Cork.
