Minister Murphy congratulates Kerry students on winning EU Model Schools Debate

Twenty eight schools from across Ireland, representing the twenty eight Member States of the European Union, competed in a Model Council of the European Union debate on renewable energy targets in Dublin Castle today. The event, which is in its eighth year, was organised by the European Commission Representation in Ireland.

Opening the debate earlier today, Minister for European Affairs, Dara Murphy, TD, told students:

“What you will be simulating today is very much like the real life situations that Irish and other Member States’ Ministers face when they attend Council meetings in Brussels or Luxembourg.”

“Member States seek to ensure that their country’s interests are represented, while at the same time looking to achieve effective and workable solutions that are agreeable to all.”

Speaking after the event, Minister Murphy said:

“I wish to congratulate all the students that participated in today’s event for their enthusiasm and their insight into both the EU decision-making process and the vitally important issue of renewable energy policy.”

“Congratulations in particular go to the winning school, Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare, Co. Kerry, who represented Bulgaria, and to the runners-up, Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, Co. Down, who represented Hungary.”
