Minister for Data Protection calls for public dialogue on data privacy and the digital economy - Expressions of interest sought for participation in Data Forum

Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD, has today called for a broad public dialogue on the opportunities and challenges arising from the growth of the digital economy, and the societal implications of greater generation and use of personal data.

To contribute to discussion in this area, the Department of the Taoiseach is to establish a consultative Data Forum, which will be chaired by Minister Murphy. Launching a call for expressions of interest for participation in the Data Forum, Minister Murphy said:

“The continued growth of the digital economy and uptake of technology across society presents us with unique opportunities and challenges. Great advances in digital technology have brought huge benefits to society. One of the results of this progress has been a vast increase in the amount of personal data that we generate as individuals.”

“My objective as Minister of State for Data Protection, and that of Government, is to ensure that Ireland’s approach to data protection in the digital economy is ‘best in class’ globally. Significant opportunities exist from the legitimate use of data - with potential benefits for individuals, society and the economy. A key challenge is continuing to ensure that we safeguard personal information, privacy and fundamental rights – giving individuals confidence that their personal data is protected.”

“With the establishment of a consultative Data Forum, we are bringing together a balance of voices from industry, civil society, academia, the legal profession and the public sector, for a focused dialogue on data privacy and the digital economy. I encourage all those with an interest in participating in the Forum to submit expressions of interest to the Department of the Taoiseach by 21 May.”

“I hope that the work of the Data Forum will contribute to the broader societal debate that we need to have on the opportunities and challenges arising from the growth of the digital economy, and the implications of greater generation and use of personal data.”
