Murphy welcomes Law Reform Commission Review and calls for debate on online privacy and digital rights
Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy T.D., this morning welcomed the launch by the Law Reform Commission of a consultation process reviewing Irish law on cyber-crime affecting personal safety, privacy and reputation, including cyber-bullying.
“The issues paper published by the Law Reform Commission comes at an important juncture. Given the rapid development of the digital economy and social media in particular, it is appropriate and timely to review the legal safeguards that are currently in place and to consider where they might need to be strengthened.”
“We must ensure that individuals, and in particular young people, are protected online. The Law Reform Commission has raised important issues that can feed into a wider national debate on online privacy and digital rights.”
“I welcome this initiative by the Law Reform Commission, which forms part of its Fourth Programme of Law Reform. I urge all interested parties to respond before the deadline for submissions in January,” said Minister Murphy.
