Taoiseach's Private Office

 

The main roles of the Private Office are:

  • To provide support to the Taoiseach in respect of his Parliamentary obligations;
  • To prepare comprehensive answers and briefing material for Parliamentary Questions in conjunction with the relevant Divisions of the Department;
  • To liaise with the Office of the Chief Whip in respect of the Order of Business and the Oireachtas commitments of the Taoiseach;
  • To ensure that the Taoiseach is provided with draft speeches in sufficient time for delivery in the Dáil and Seanad;
  • To ensure that the Taoiseach makes his returns under the Ethics in Public Office Act 1995 and the Electoral Act 1997 in accordance with statutory guidelines;
  • To support the Taoiseach as Head of Government by providing all necessary briefing and documentation prior to Government meetings;
  • To liaise with the Government Secretariat in respect of the Government Agenda and priority issues;
  • To ensure that the Taoiseach holds bilateral meetings with Ministers and Ministers of State on a regular basis;
  • To liaise with the office of the President;
  • To act as the point of contact between the Taoiseach and all Divisions of his Department;
  • To ensure that the Taoiseach has twenty-four hour a day/seven days a week support in his role as Head of Government;
  • To liaise with the Department of Defence and Ministerial offices in relation to the Ministerial Air Transport Service;
  • To ensure that the Taoiseach is represented at certain funeral services and other solemn occasions when he cannot attend himself;
  • To manage the commitments of the Taoiseach in respect of domestic and foreign engagements to ensure that his time is productively utilised;
  • To maintain and manage the Taoiseach's Diary by obtaining and considering advice in respect of all invitations to the Taoiseach and arranging protocol and draft speeches for each function he attends;
  • To liaise with the Protocol Division in respect of inward visits by other Heads of State or Government and foreign dignitaries and with other Divisions within the Department regarding outward visits by the Taoiseach;
  • To provide for efficient and effective processing of all internal and external communications (written, telephonic or electronic) in line with the Department's Quality Customer Service Statement;
  • To ensure effective management of the Taoiseach’s Private Office; and
  • To provide a support service to the Taoiseach’s Advisors.
