Taoiseach to Travel to the European Council, 16/17 December 2010

The Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., will travel to Brussels today, accompanied by the Minister for European Affairs, Mr. Dick Roche T.D., to participate in a meeting of the European Council.

The agenda of the Council will be dominated by economic issues and, in particular, the EU Heads of State and Government will work to agree the wording of a limited treaty amendment to provide for a permanent mechanism to safeguard the financial stability of the euro area. Ireland will be seeking to ensure any amendment is fully compatible with the Irish Constitution.

The European Council will also be informed of ongoing work on the evaluation of the European Union's relations with its strategic partners, including the US, Russia and China.
