Taoiseach congratulates golfer Darren Clarke

17th July 2011

The Taoiseach Mr Enda Kenny T.D., today congratulated Northern Ireland golfer Darren Clarke following his victory.

"Heartiest congratulations to Darren Clarke on his victory in The Open Championship in Royal St George's.

It is an outstanding achievement to win his first major so far into his career, especially given his mentoring of Rory McIlroy which contributed to his victory in the US open recently.

Darren has shown great resilience in both his personal and golfing life, and todays victory is a vindication of that resilience.

Darren's victory further reinforces the status of Irish golf internationally, following on from the achievements in recent years of Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy and highlights Ireland is a home of golfing champions.

I am hopeful that this run of success can lead to the Irish Open securing a major sponsor in the longer term showcasing Ireland as one of the world's foremost golfing destinations."
