Foráiltear leis an Acht um Shaoráil Faisnéise go bhfuil na cearta dlí seo a leanas ag gach duine, ón 21 Aibreán 1998 amach:
- ceart rochtana ar aon taifid oifigiúla atá i seilbh Ranna Rialtais nó comhlachtaí eile poiblí a liostaítear san Acht;
- ceart go gceartófaí nó go dtabharfaí cothrom le dáta eolas pearsanta a bhaineann leo atá neamhiomlán, míchruinn nó míthreorach; agus
- ceart go dtabharfaí cúiseanna dóibh ar chinntí a dhéanann comhlachtaí poiblí a bhfuil tionchar acu orthu.
Ciallaíonn na cearta seo gur féidir le daoine, ón 21 Aibreán, 1998, rochtain ar eolas pearsanta a bhaineann leo a lorg, cuma cathain a cruthaíodh an t-eolas, agus rochtain ar thaifid eile a cruthaíodh tar éis an 21 Aibreán, 1998, a lorg.
